Keene residents may see short-lived changes in tap water color after Court Street Well #2 is shut down on Thursday, September 24, according to the City of Keene Public Works Department.
The city said turning a well on or off can alter how water moves through the distribution network, which can stir up sediment and lead to temporary discoloration.
If water appears off-color, officials recommend leaving only one faucet open and flushing cold water for 10 minutes. If the water is still not clear, the tap should be shut off and the same step tried again after 30 minutes. Anyone still seeing discoloration after that is asked to reach out to Public Works.
Households that notice staining on laundry after water runs discolored should avoid drying the clothing. Instead, they should contact Public Works or go to the office at 350 Marlboro Street, where staff can supply a treatment product intended to help remove the marks.
