Embattled Windsor County Sheriff Not Seeking Reelection

Following allegations, he has distanced himself from the daily operations of the Sheriff’s Department.

Windsor County sheriff has decided against running for reelection in 2026 amidst ongoing legal troubles. Ryan Palmer, who took office in 2022, communicated via phone that he will not participate in the upcoming campaign.

Several charges have been brought against him, involving accusations of sexual misconduct, to which he has entered a plea of not guilty. Following these allegations, he has distanced himself from the daily operations of the Sheriff’s Department.

In a separate development, Claude Weyant, currently serving as acting sheriff, has submitted the necessary paperwork to enter the race for sheriff. The deadline for major party candidates to register for Vermont’s primary election was Thursday.
