Hate-Motivated Vandalism Cited at Brattleboro Transportation Center

After reviewing the damage, investigators concluded that the graffiti had been sprayed during the night.

Brattleboro police have issued citations to two people after an overnight graffiti incident at the Brattleboro Transportation Center that investigators say included racially charged images and offensive messages.

The case came to light Wednesday when the vandalism was reported, according to police. After reviewing the damage, investigators concluded that the graffiti had been sprayed during the night and identified the suspects as 20-year-old Maya Makokha of Brattleboro and 20-year-old Haroon Ahmed of Putney.

Both were charged with unlawful mischief and the offense was classified by police as hate motivated. The two are expected to answer the charges in Windham County Superior Court on Oct. 20.

Police did not release further information about what was written or depicted. Under the law, both Makokha and Ahmed are considered innocent unless a court finds them guilty.
