If water comes out rusty or cloudy, residents are advised to shut off every tap except one and let cold water run for 10 minutes.
The City of Keene’s seasonal water main flushing effort is moving into another week, with crews set to work overnight from 10 p.m. Sunday, October 4, through 6 a.m. Friday, October 9.
The third round of the citywide program is expected to reach several parts of Keene, though Public Works said the list of locations can shift because of weather or equipment problems. The full fall schedule is projected to last three to four weeks.
City officials say the overnight timing is intended to reduce the chance of daytime traffic slowdowns and to limit the inconvenience of temporary water discoloration. The flushing is meant to clear out mineral buildup inside the mains and to test valves and hydrants so they remain ready for firefighting, water main breaks and other urgent needs.
If water comes out rusty or cloudy, residents are advised to shut off every tap except one and let cold water run for 10 minutes. If the water is still discolored, the city recommends turning the tap off, waiting 30 minutes and trying again.
Public Works also warns that laundry may be stained during the work. Clothing with stains should not be dried, and residents can call 603-352-6550 for assistance with a stain-removal product.
