New interim CEO at BMH

BMH Board Chairwoman Chloe Learey said Sanville’s background in hospital finance and operations makes him well suited to guide the organization.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital has named David C. Sanville as its interim chief executive officer while the board looks for a permanent leader. His new role began Oct. 1, and the hospital says he will focus on keeping operations steady during the transition.

Sanville is not replacing the hospital’s finance chief. Fred Schaffner, who became BMH CFO in May 2026, remains in charge of financial operations. The hospital said Sanville’s interim CEO assignment is separate from the CFO position.

The leadership change also means a shift in the acting CEO structure. Dr. Tony Blofson and Dr. Elizabeth McLarney, who stepped into the acting CEO jobs in October 2025, will finish that service this month. Hospital leaders said both doctors will stay involved as Senior Advisors to the Interim CEO.

BMH Board Chairwoman Chloe Learey said Sanville’s background in hospital finance and operations makes him well suited to guide the organization while the search continues. She also pointed to his familiarity with BMH, its employees and the broader community.

Sanville has worked with BMH through his consulting firm, DUNAMIS Consulting Services, beginning in October 2025. During that time, he served as executive financial consultant and, for part of the period, interim chief financial officer. Before that, he spent more than 30 years in health care finance and operations roles.

His prior work includes more than nine years at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor, where he was chief financial officer and a senior leader overseeing ancillary services. He also worked within the Dartmouth Health system as an internal consultant supporting hospitals with analysis, problem-solving and long-range planning.

Earlier in his career, Sanville spent more than 14 years at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, including nearly 13 years as CFO and vice president of finance. His duties there included budgeting, reimbursement, capital planning, strategic work and other management responsibilities. He has also held leadership posts at Central Vermont Medical Center, Concord Hospital and Health System, and other organizations in Vermont and New Hampshire.

BMH said Sanville’s experience includes work with reimbursement systems, 340B, Federally Qualified Health Center and Rural Health Clinic models, cost reporting and contract management, all of which are especially relevant as the hospital considers becoming an FQHC. That possibility was raised briefly during a visit by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt, with hospital staff.
