Police say noisy car exhaust may have caused gunshot reports near Exit 2

So far the investigation has turned up nothing to indicate that anyone fired a weapon.

Officers found no sign that a shooting occurred Thursday night after responding to reports of possible gunfire near Exit 2 and the General John Stark Memorial Bridge, Police Chief Jeremy Evans said.

The call prompted police to check both areas after residents reported hearing what sounded like gunshots. No injured people were found, and investigators did not recover any shell casings or other physical evidence of a shooting.

As patrol officers worked the scene, they noticed several vehicles with aftermarket exhaust systems that produced sharp sounds similar to the noises people had reported. Police said those vehicles may have been the source of the confusion.

Evans said the department’s review is still centered on the initial reports and what officers observed during the response, but so far the investigation has turned up nothing to indicate that anyone fired a weapon.
