Authorities identify Peterborough man after Sunday night violence leaves 1 dead, 1 hurt

The man who died in the confrontation was identified as 24 year old Jack Hutchings.

State investigators on Monday identified the man who died in a Sunday night confrontation on Grove Street as Jack Hutchings, 24, of Peterborough.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said officers responded to a home on Grove Street after a disturbance that involved two adult neighbors. When police arrived, Hutchings was found dead from gunshot wounds. The office said the other person injured in the incident was an off-duty Peterborough police officer who remained in the hospital with apparent stab or incision wounds.

Officials did not name the injured man or say whether they believe he was the person who fired the shot that killed Hutchings. Investigators are also still examining whether the shooting may have been justified as self-defense.

An autopsy on Hutchings was completed Monday by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, but the findings were not released.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the disturbance happened around 8 p.m. Sunday outside the neighbors’ homes on Grove Street. The agency did not say whether Hutchings and the injured officer were the two people involved in that dispute.

Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker said earlier Monday that Grove Street had been shut down from the police department area to about 60 Grove St. because of the scene. Neither Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard nor Attorney General’s Office spokesman Michael Garrity could be reached Monday for additional comment.
