Governor Phil Scott announced the appointment of Sandi Hoffman as the new commissioner of the Department for Children and Families on Friday. Hoffman, who has dedicated eighteen years to DCF, had been serving as the interim commissioner since September, subsequent to Chris Winters' transition to the role of deputy commissioner of labor.
In a statement regarding her new position, Hoffman expressed her gratitude towards the Governor and Secretary Samuelson for the opportunity. She conveyed her eagerness to continue collaborating with the dedicated team at DCF and acknowledged the professionalism she witnesses among her colleagues.
The Department for Children and Families is responsible for a wide range of functions, including investigating cases of child abuse and neglect, managing child protective services and foster care, overseeing juvenile offender programs, administering essential federal benefits such as food assistance and fuel aid, and evaluating disability claims.
Recently, DCF has encountered significant challenges, particularly in the management of its emergency housing initiative and the development of a new facility for juvenile offenders to succeed the now-closed Woodside. Additionally, the department has faced scrutiny regarding its ability to effectively monitor violations in child care programs.
