Gov. Phil Scott is taking a more active approach to his reelection effort this year, with signs that his campaign is becoming more aggressive ahead of November. Among them was a fundraising email sent to supporters this week, something he has rarely done.
The message pointed to a recent UNH poll that showed Scott’s approval slipping, a result some Democrats say strengthens their case for political change. Scott and his supporters argue the poll does not reflect the full picture, noting that a new Morning Consult survey still ranks him as the most popular governor in the country at 71%.
Scott said Tuesday that the only survey he plans to focus on is the one voters deliver in November.
He also intends to repeat a strategy he used in the previous election cycle, when he invested significant time and money in campaigning for other candidates lower on the ticket. That effort helped contribute to the end of the legislature’s supermajority, and Scott said he wants to back more Republicans and moderate Democrats who align with him on taxes and affordability.
The shape of those races is still uncertain, but the field for November will become clearer after the Aug. 11 primaries.
