Brattleboro is inviting the public to weigh in on a new version of the long-running Putney Road Reconstruction Project, a major overhaul of a stretch of U.S. Route 5 that has been under discussion for years.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation is leading the effort, which would rebuild about 1.25 miles of roadway from the north side of Veterans Bridge to the roundabout at Exit 3. The project area is expected to remain a focal point for traffic and access concerns because of its location on one of the town’s busiest corridors.
The first version of the plan called for four roundabouts, a divided highway section, sidewalks, bike lanes, and upgrades to stormwater systems and landscaping. After reviewing the scope, VTrans has developed an alternative concept intended to meet the same overall goals while shrinking the footprint of the work and limiting possible impacts.
That revised design was presented to the Brattleboro Selectboard on September 15. VTrans is now looking for the board’s backing before the proposal comes back for discussion at a future Selectboard meeting.
Town officials have posted the concept drawings and the agency’s presentation online, and they are encouraging residents to send in questions and comments through the Town of Brattleboro’s website.
