Keene Streets, Bridge, and Trail Work Will Affect Travel This Week

Keene Public Works is urging people traveling through construction areas to slow down and allow extra time for delays.

Drivers, walkers, and cyclists in Keene should expect a busy week of construction activity, with crews working in several parts of the city and a mix of lane changes, closures, and trail restrictions in place.

One of the larger jobs is on Marlboro Street, where Bazin Brothers Trucking is carrying out the next phase of the reconstruction project between Baker Street and Eastern Avenue. The current work includes granite curb installation, along with loam, seeding, and plantings. During the day, traffic may be limited to alternating one-way flow or shifted into a temporary two-way pattern through the active zone. The city expects normal conditions to return each evening. This portion of the project should last about two weeks, followed by paving, with the full Marlboro Street effort projected to wrap up by the end of October.

At the George Street Bridge Replacement Project, New England Infrastructure, Inc. is in the cleanup and streambed restoration stage. George Street remains closed, and detours will stay in place until the project is finished. City officials say this phase should take about eight weeks, with more updates to come as the job advances.

Work is also continuing near Eastern Avenue and the Transportation Heritage Trail trailhead, where Gordon’s Property Services and Maintenance is installing culverts and fencing. Trail paving is set to resume Thursday, October 1, as crews finish the surface course work. The trail will be closed starting that day while the paving is underway, and the remaining tasks are expected to take roughly three weeks, with completion planned for October.

In Central Square, Casella is still installing water utilities for the city. Parking areas and portions of the square within the work zone may be shifted, blocked, or detoured as needed, though the city expects parking and traffic patterns to be back to normal by the end of each business day.

On Baker Street, CM Minkler will start milling and paving at 7 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, between Belmont Avenue and Beaver Brook. That stretch will operate under alternating one-way traffic while the work is underway, with the road expected to reopen to usual conditions after the day’s work is complete.
