Brattleboro Unveils New Amtrak Station in Downtown

The station is particularly noteworthy for being the first in Vermont to feature a level boarding platform

Brattleboro, Vermont, marked the opening of its new downtown Amtrak station on Wednesday with a celebratory event that drew a significant crowd. The station, which has been in development for several years, welcomed the southbound Vermonter train at 1 p.m. amid a festive atmosphere complete with music and refreshments.

The station is particularly noteworthy for being the first in Vermont to feature a level boarding platform, eliminating the need for steps when entering or exiting the train. This design choice is aligned with efforts to enhance accessibility for all passengers. Governor Phil Scott emphasized the importance of accessibility, recalling personal experiences with his father, a World War II veteran and double amputee, who faced challenges accessing certain public spaces.

For travelers like Yar Dang from Queens, New York, the train offers a convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation. Dang, who attended a conference at Landmark College, expressed enthusiasm about the train journey, describing it as an enjoyable experience without the need for a car. Naomi Silverman, traveling back to New York with her husband, shared her surprise at the significance of the station. The new facility is conveniently located near their home, making train travel an easy choice for the couple.

David Handera from Amtrak highlighted the station's strategic location near downtown. He also noted potential plans to repurpose two old bridges to New Hampshire into recreational spaces, including an outdoor venue and a bike trail, which could further integrate the station into the community. Currently, Brattleboro is served by one daily round-trip train connecting Washington, D.C., and St. Albans, with two stops in the town.

Future plans aim to introduce an additional daily service between White River and New Haven, Connecticut, providing Upper Valley residents with more travel options.
