Julie Perrin has been appointed as the new director of Brooks Memorial Library, succeeding Star Laconia, who is set to retire on April 25. Perrin's previous role was as the leader of the Jaffrey Public Library in Jaffrey, N.H., where she served for nine years and gained valuable experience in developing library programs, managing operations, and securing grants. Her official start date is scheduled for May 11.
John Potter, the town manager, expressed enthusiasm about Perrin's appointment, highlighting her passion and innovative thinking as assets that would aid in guiding the library's future. He noted her proficiency in effective management, fundraising, and overseeing facility projects, which is particularly relevant since Brooks will undergo renovations in the coming year.
Perrin articulated her view that public libraries are vital for both social welfare and economic growth, especially for marginalized groups. She emphasized Brooks Memorial Library's significant role as a resource for Brattleboro and surrounding rural areas, asserting that it has the potential to create a lasting positive influence on the community.
During her tenure at Jaffrey Public Library, Perrin focused on modernizing traditional libraries, striving to broaden literacy to encompass various important subjects, including technology and health. This holistic approach aimed to equip patrons with essential skills beyond just reading and writing.
In 2020, the New Hampshire Library Trustees Association honored Perrin as Library Director of the Year, recognizing her proactive development of a pandemic response policy that served as a model statewide. Throughout her career, she has implemented numerous initiatives catering to diverse age groups, offering everything from youth coding classes to tailored assistance for seniors navigating online resources.
Sally Cruz Nix, the Human Resources Director, noted that from a pool of 22 strong candidates, Perrin was the unanimous choice among stakeholders due to her alignment with the community's values and her leadership capabilities.
Jennifer Rowe, Treasurer of the Brooks Memorial Library Board of Trustees and member of the hiring panel, remarked on Perrin's vibrancy and the breadth of her skills, stating that these attributes make her especially suitable for the library’s mission. Rowe highlighted Perrin's experience in curating engaging programs and building partnerships with local entities.
An example of Perrin's impactful work at Jaffrey Public Library includes the emphasis on STEAM education, supported by funding from a local manufacturing business to enhance science learning. Reflecting on her own educational journey, she acknowledged the challenges she faced with science, which inspired her to help young learners discover its wonders.
Perrin emphasized the importance of community collaboration for her new role, expressing her eagerness to connect with Brattleboro’s residents and organizations. Her visit to the library prior to beginning the new position allowed her to appreciate the dedication of the library staff and local department heads.
She looks forward to engaging with community feedback regarding their appreciation of the library and will be seeking insights on future endeavors, sharing her excitement about the collaborative opportunities ahead.
