Water Main Break Causes Closure on Water Street in Keene

As city crews work, local residents and businesses may experience reduced water pressure or complete service interruptions.

Water Street in Keene is currently closed between Grove Street and Carpenter Street due to a water main break that occurred on Friday. As city crews work to address the issue, local residents and businesses may experience reduced water pressure or complete service interruptions.

The recent rupture is significant as it is located in the same vicinity as a severe break that happened in July 2025, which resulted in a citywide boil water advisory. This section of the water main has been problematic, having ruptured four times since 2007, raising alarms about the aging water infrastructure in the area. According to the Public Works Director, the pipe, which was installed in 1957, is nearing the end of its typical lifespan of 100 to 120 years and is believed to have a defect that contributed to these recurring failures.

Repair crews are working diligently to restore service, although the timeline for the completion of repairs remains uncertain. The city has allocated $250,000 in its upcoming fiscal year budget as part of its Capital Improvement Program to inspect the condition of this water main and assess necessary repairs.

In light of this incident, authorities have advised motorists to steer clear of the affected area until further notice, while updates regarding the situation will be communicated as they become available.
