Local fire departments in Keene, Spofford and Surry are set to benefit from a share of more than $3.6 million in federal Assistance to Firefighters Grants awarded across New Hampshire.

Local fire departments in Keene, Spofford and Surry are set to benefit from a share of more than $3.6 million in federal Assistance to Firefighters Grants awarded across New Hampshire.

The funding, distributed by FEMA, is intended to help departments buy equipment, update protective gear, replace or add emergency vehicles, and support training and other operational needs that help first responders work more safely at emergency scenes.

In Keene, the City will receive $198,181.81, with the money earmarked for power cots and power lift systems. The Spofford Fire District is slated to get $72,380.95 for firefighter breathing apparatus. The Town of Surry will receive $32,761.90 to purchase a washer and dryer for personal protective equipment.

The awards were announced Friday by the New Hampshire congressional delegation, including U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and Representatives Chris Pappas and Maggie Goodlander. Officials said the grants are part of a broader effort to make sure fire departments have the resources needed to respond effectively and protect the communities they serve.

Goodlander cited examples from around the state, including breathing equipment for departments in Littleton, Goshen, Spofford and Hebron, along with a new tanker for Hancock. Shaheen and Hassan also stressed the importance of sustained support for local emergency responders.

The federal program covers a wide range of needs, from firefighting gear and emergency response tools to training and protective clothing. Shaheen, who serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee, has also been involved in federal efforts tied to firefighter safety, including PFAS exposure concerns and funding for the AFG and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response programs.
