Animal Control Officer Brechner assessed the animals’ condition, which resulted in the removal of several cats and one dog.
A police welfare check at a Brattleboro residence on Oct. 16 led to animal cruelty citations for two people after officers found several cats and a dog in conditions authorities described as unsanitary.
The Brattleboro Police Department said Officer Zachary Lopez went to the home of Matthew L. Plantikow, 54, of Brattleboro, at about 2:10 p.m. and found circumstances that appeared harmful to the animals living there. Animal Control Officer Brechner then examined the scene and assessed the animals’ condition, which resulted in the removal of several cats and one dog.
Police said Plantikow was issued a citation and released. During the follow-up investigation, Brechner identified Monica Lankton, 50, of Manchester, N.H., as the person responsible for the animals and determined that she had allegedly allowed them to remain in those conditions. Lankton was later found and also cited for cruelty to animals.
Both are due in Vermont Superior Court's Windham Criminal Division on Dec. 1. As in all criminal cases, they are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
